On November 29th, 2023, the wolverine was listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act finally receiving federal protections. Now, the US Fish and Wildlife Service is tasked with determining “critical habitat” within a year of the listing decision.

“Current and increasing impacts of climate change and associated habitat degradation and fragmentation are imperiling the North American wolverine,” said USFWS Pacific Regional Director Hugh Morrison. “Based on the best available science, this listing determination will help to stem the long-term impact and enhance the viability of wolverines in the contiguous United States.”

The Great Burn ecosystem’s unique late season snowpack. Deep and persistent spring snowpack like that found in our mission area is key for wolverine maternal denning habitat and necessary for the survival of the species.
