On Jan. 31, the Forest Service released the proposed action for a new Lolo National Forest plan. This preliminary draft of the Forest plan marks the first official phase of the process to revise the 1986 Lolo Forest plan, which is currently in effect. Once finalized, the new plan will guide how the Forest Service manages the Lolo National Forest for the next 15 to 30 years.
Lolo National Forest Plan
Comment Writing Workshop
Thursday, March 7, 6–7:30 p.m.
Headwaters Foundation, Missoula
Open to all, registration not required
The Forest Service is initially proposing to retain the previously recommended Wilderness areas across the Lolo National Forest. This provides a great starting point for revision. But there are still a few other plan components we’d like to see in the next draft. Read more about what Wild Montana recommends for the Lolo plan here.
The public now has just under 60 days to submit a comment to the Forest Service. After the comment period closes on April 1, the Forest Service will consider the input it received to craft different plan alternatives, which will go back out to the public for feedback around the end of 2024. It’s critical the Forest Service hears from you at this early stage of the Lolo Forest plan revision so that the final plan protects wildlife habitat, headwaters, quiet recreation opportunities, and everything else we love about the Forest.
Wild Montana is hosting additional comment writing event opportunities. If you want to first learn more about the plan and how to write effective comments, join them at one of the following events, where they’ll be breaking down the forest plan revision process and providing comment-writing guidance.
